gruff rhys

Bethesda- 08/02/2005
Neuadd Ogwen

The gig was the first Welsh solo date by Gruff Rhys, in his home town of Bethesda. Support was from Alun Tan Lan who played before Gruff's hour long set. It was not the average sort of set, with Gruff interspersing songs with stories and jokes (all in Welsh of course), which suited the old cinema as a venue very well. On stage was a myriad of dodgy keyboard synthesisers and toys, which were sampled along with the audience to make backing tracks to the songs whilst he played along acousticly, which were different but brillinat alternatives to the backing on record. In the middle of the gig Gruff drew a raffle, of jokingly a holiday for 6 to Jamaica and Barbados! Along with playing most tracks from his recent album Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, he played a few Super Furry Animals tracks as well as Ffa Coffi Pawb classic Allan O'i Phen. Throughout the set Gruff had the audience singing and laughing along alike, and finished the set joined by Alun Tan lan on Banjo to play Chwarae'n Troi'n Chwerw.
